Tempe launches "green" web page
TEMPE, Ariz. - The city of Tempe Transportation Division has published a web
page to promote its two environmentally-friendly projects, the East Valley
Bus Operations and Maintenance Facility and the Tempe Transportation Center.
The purpose of the web page is to educate the public about these projects.

Both facilities will be certified at the Silver Level by the U.S. Green
Building Council. The Tempe Transportation Center will be the first
multipurpose transportation facility in the nation to receive Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.
U.S. Green Building Council is the nation's foremost coalition of leaders
from across the building industry working to promote buildings that are
environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work.
Green building is a whole-systems approach using design and building
techniques to minimize environmental impact and reduce energy consumption of
buildings while contributing to the health of the occupants.
The 250-bus maintenance facility will be jointly owned and operated by the
cities of Tempe and Scottsdale and the Regional Public Transportation
Authority. Both cities are actively supporting LEED certified buildings in
their communities. The facility will include 75,600 square feet of
maintenance space, 7,100 square feet of fuel and wash space and 19,650
square feet of administration and operations space. Construction of the
East Valley Maintenance Facility will begin this fall with a scheduled
completion date of spring 2007. The facility will be located at Priest Drive
and Rio Salado Parkway.
The Transportation Center will be located at Veterans Way and College
Avenue. The project includes a three-story, 38,000 sq. ft. building, an
exterior shaded courtyard and a transit plaza serving the new Metro light
rail and local, regional and Greyhound bus patrons. The project includes a
2,000 square foot conference/community room which will highlight the
sustainable strategies implemented in the project. Also located at the
Transportation Center site will be a Veterans Memorial. Construction is
scheduled begin September 2005 with the facility opening May 2007.
